The view overlooking Shela from the rooftop

Kisimani House was originally built in the late 18th Century for the Caliph of Zanzibar when Lamu was in its Golden Age. As you step through the beautiful carved Lamu doors set in the traditional Lamu baraza entrance and down into the sunken courtyard you travel back in time, shades of Arabian nights. The ground floor is the historical part of the house. Here there is a double bedroom in the original harem quarters, carved Zidaka niches and courtyard garden.

Take the stairs up to the first floor, still part of the original house, on this level there is another double bedroom with annex, ideal for children sharing with parents. This level has the Dining pink Bougainvillaea terrace and large kitchen. Stairs to 'Arusi' level, a spacious honeymoon suite with large double bed, covered veranda with two single beds and attractive terrace with fabulous views. Stairs continue to 'Takwa' level, double ensuite with veranda beds, dining terrace under the stars and beautiful views of the sea. Stairs then proceed to crows nest Baraza with far reaching views of the Lamu archipelago.

Kisimani has been carefully restored, extended and beautifully furnished in the Swahili style. There is a plentiful supply of fresh water from its own deep well.

The house accommodates four couples (or two families) in four double rooms ensuite. There are either ceiling or standing fans in each room and treated mosquito nets. There are 2 extra single beds situated in bedroom annexes/veranda on each floor.
